| | None | ] | So, I have two bands and we put our music up on Bandcamp so people can check it out and buy it. We do ok, but I think it'd be cool to hear about where other people put there stuff and how it's been working out. Of course iTunes is an obvious choice, but I like the business model better at Bandcamp. Not gonna go into all the ins and outs of Bandcamp unless it seems people wanna chime in on this subject. Any bands or musicians game? Plus we could share any marketing ideas that have worked or failed miserably. Could be educational.
To hear our stuff follow the links below.
For Civita(pron. cheh-VEE-tah) go to http://www.civita.bandcamp.com and you'll see two album covers. Just click one. I play guitar and my wife Mel( instantkarmma) sings. Here's an example. I actually play guitar and bass in this example. It's called Unsure.
For The Nathaniel Johnstone band go to http://www.nathanieljohnstone.bandcamp.com and there's two albums there as well. One live and one studio. I play bass and Mel sings again. Here's an example of that called Ifritah.

| Genre Question |

| | You Are...By Sky Cries Mary | ] | Peter( maxmin) put a poll up in his journal asking if Nine Inch Nails is considered an industrial band or not. That quite innocent question really got me thinking about bands, music, genres and such. On one hand, I understand and agree with the idea of labeling music and bands by genre. It's like looking for books in the library. You want fantasy, sci-fi, romance, whatever...you go to that section and find what you want. But for a lot of bands, and perhaps, a lot of authors as well, genre's can feel suffocating. Someone that wants to write in a wide musical pallet, but also wants to have some amount of success at it is at an automatic disadvantage because he won't know how to promote his band. If you have one psychedelic, two metal and four rock n roll and two jazz songs on your album, how do you promote that? Who's going to shell out 15 bucks for a cd where only three of the songs on it are what they want to here? I've found that people like me, that listen to everything from videogame soundtracks to jazz to metal, are somewhat rare. But the good news is, with iTunes and everything, people aren't so much into albums anymore anyway. So I guess that no matter what we come up with in Civita, we'll just put out and market each song on it's own merits. And an advantage we've realized is we can taylor our shows to what ever type of gig the promoter is putting on. We can play pretty much with any band on any bill and fit right in just by modifying our setlist. Like I told Peter, I think it will take longer to build a nice big following, but we'll be able to make it much bigger in the long run because we'll have the freedom to go in any direction at the drop of a hat and not piss off any fans by doing it.
Speaking of music, Hey Nova!( novabella) I know I promised you a write-up of the last Sky Cries Mary show since you couldn't make it. I've been busy, but not so much at the moment, so I'll write one up soon! Here's some SCM live footage to tide you over til then.

| recommendations for selling older equipment |
[Nov. 16th, 2006|10:50 pm] |
I need to sell an older piece of gear (Digidesign 001 rack unit). eBay annoys me (okay, I admit, they shut my listing down because I said I would only take a direct bank withdrawal paypal since I don't have one of those fancy premiere accounts). The stupid thing isn't moving on craig's list.
Anyone have any recommendations for good places online to sell used, older pro audio gear?

| | Law And Order | ] | Well, Civita's first album is finally out and ready to purchase! Well, online download purchase anyway. We found a pretty good site to host our album for internet sales. It's called Independencemusic.net and so far it's cool. All kinds of bands there, sorted by genre, and it's really easy to navigate. We've been looking for a decent site since the original mp3.com went down. The new mp3.com is ok, but their privacy statement comes right out and says that they'll give certain personal info to third parties they deal with and take no responsibility for what those third parties do. So yeah, we're going with Indiependencemusic.net. You can click (here) to check out our music and purchase it, or search the site for the music you like. And it's totally free. They take 20% of sales to make money. So anyone looking for our stuff or other new music, go check it out. Any bands looking to sell their stuff online, here's an easy site to use. We'll probably be up on iTunes eventually as well since they're the biggest site. But I like pimping the little guys. |

So, one of my bands, Civita, has gotten an offer for some radio rotation. Not internet, broadcast radio. Which is great but that means I have to get off my arse and get our stuff copywrited and think about publishing. In my old band our quitar player handled all that, although I do have a basic knowledge of what needs to get done. My questions are A, are there any advantages to going with BMI or ASCAP? Or maybe some small publishing company. And B...Is it better to copywrite each song or do our whole CD at once. It's cheaper to do the whole thing at once, but I'd heard something about a loophole where people can use a small percentage of your copywrited material and get away with it. Something to the effect that it's legal to use like 3% of a copywrite and if someone copywrited a whole double album, instead of a song, that might mean a whole song could be used! That's the gist of the rumor I heard and I'm probably explaining it all wrong, but again, the question is...copywrite the whole thing at once(the cheapest route), or copywrite each individual song. Suggestions? |

| What do you sign when signing autographs? |
[Jul. 17th, 2006|10:06 am] |
Okay, so I am lame. When people ask me to autograph CD's and stuff, I just sign my name. I KNOW most celebrities do more, "To my number one fan, keep on trucking!" or what ever.
Do you have anything cool you normally put? I need ideas.

The t-shirts come in regular, baby-doll and a really cute 3/4 length sleeve raglan design for ladies. Click here to be taken to our merchandise page to order a new t-shirt.
We've also got a show coming up in Austin, TX with Voltaire on Friday June 30. If you're in Texas, head down to Austin to Elysium nightclub to see Brobdingnagian Bards, the Machine in the Garden and Voltaire. It should be a fun show!

| Any Local Drummers available? |

| | Turning Japanese...By The Vapors | ] | Ok, so my band Civita (pron. cheh-VEE-tah) is in a bit of a dilemma. Our drummer got an invite to attend The Berklee College of Music out in Boston and will be gone for a minimum of two years. So we're looking for a replacement. I've posted all the details in my journal (here) so that I could post this message in all the communities I belong to and not clog up anyones flist pages. If you're curious about our music go to http://www.myspace.com/civitaband for your listening pleasure. Thanks for your time, and any drummers out there looking for a good gig, please come check us out.

| Cool Gear |
[Apr. 25th, 2006|01:52 pm] |
thanks to the generosity of fans, I have been able to replace some of the gear that was stolen. A serious bonus has been how cool gear is these days. For example, I just added this to the growing arsenal:

Its a Lexicon (say it with me slowly, Lex EE Kon....ooo, that feels good to say) so it sound just freakin "holy crap, thats straight off the album!" gorgeous.
But it also carries this awsome, straight outta 2006 feature: USB2. I jack this puppy straight into the laptop Kristina uses live, and tweak all of my sounds on the computer. Then, as the set goes by, the MX200 makes sure every patch is a perfect fit for the song, delays matching song tempo, verbs, coruses etc., matching the album. Its really kind of scary how powerful this makes me!
So, for those of you playing along at home, here is how I intend to use it live:
In a rack box, I place the lexicon, and a Behringer MX882 Splitter:

Me and magdaleneveen's mics will go into the beringer, then they will split into to lines each. One of each of those lines will go into the Lexicon, which will be set in Dual Mono. Now, the sound man has 2 lines from each mic: one wet, and one dry. He can then do his deal without worrying about feed back of too much effects in monitors, and the fans will hear these "album perfect" effects.
I am a freaking genious, and Abney Park fans are fucking saints! |
